Lyon is the second most populous city of France, after Paris. It is a very important tourist destination, being situated in the east-central part of the country. The city is famous for its architectural and historical landmarks, making part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. It used to be a significant region for silk production and weaving. Today it is best-known as the capital of gastronomy in France. Lyon attracts thousands or even millions of tourists each year due to its gastronomical importance and landmarks. The Fine Arts Museum of Lyon

The most famous and most important museum of the city is the Fine Arts Museum of Lyon (Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon). Housed in the “Palais Saint Pierre”, the museum is considered to be one of the country’s largest art galleries. The fantastic collections of the museum make it one of the most important of Europe, dragging numerous visitors yearly.

The famous museum includes works by such famous artists like Rembrandt, Rubens, Delacroix, Van Gogh, Gauguin or Monet. The museum is open every day, except Tuesdays and holidays, from 10:00 to 18:00, on Fridays from 10:30 to 18:00. (September 2013)

The African Museum of Lyon

If you are interested in the Black Continent, Africa, visiting the African Museum of Lyon is a must for you! It is considered to be the oldest museum of the country dedicated to Africa. The museum is also one of the oldest of Lyon. Established in 1861, the museum is famous for its West African collections.

The large building which houses the museum includes more than 2.000 African objects of all kind. The collections are actually divided into three major parts: Social Life, Everyday Life and Religious Life. The museum can be visited Wednesday to Sunday, from 14:00 to 18:00. (September 2013)

The Gallo-Roman Museum

Dedicated to the Gallo-Roman civilization of Lyon, the Gallo-Roman Museum is another important museum of Lyon. The museum can be found on the Fourvière hill, near the Roman theatre of Lyon. There are displayed here several valuable artworks and items found on the site of Roman Lyon.
